The comment section was the focus group. When Emily Weiss launched Into the Gloss in 2010 while still assisting at Vogue, she spent years interviewing people about the products on their actual bathroom shelves, and the readers who showed up to argue and confess in the comments became an unpaid product-development team. That dynamic shaped how the company built its hits: a year before any cleanser existed, the team asked readers to describe their dream face wash in detail, and the resulting brief practically wrote the Milky Jelly Cleanser. The breakout product, Boy Brow, came from the same well, born of a recurring request for a brow gel that looked fluffy and natural rather than stiff and waxy.
That consumer-as-collaborator model defined the early aesthetic too: minimalist, dewy, sold in a pink that turned packaging into free advertising as buyers posted it themselves. The philosophy ran the opposite direction from the contouring maximalism dominating beauty at the time.
What is less appreciated is how dramatically the strategy reversed. After years of refusing wholesale and insisting on selling only through its own site and showrooms, the brand made a sharp pivot in February 2023, entering roughly 600 Sephora doors across the U.S. and Canada in its first wholesale deal ever. That reorientation came with rounds of layoffs and a leadership shuffle, and it traded the original direct-to-consumer purity for the reach of physical retail. Around the same time, it named Olivia Rodrigo its first brand ambassador to court a younger audience.
The formulation through-line has stayed remarkably consistent across all of it: easy, low-irritation products designed to be approachable instead of clinically aggressive. The hardware changed, the distribution changed, the cap table changed; the gentle, mood-driven approach to the actual contents did not.
