The story behind O'Keeffe's Read the full story

Bill, a sheep rancher in the arid Klamath Basin along the California-Oregon line, had hands so weathered that he once described his daughter's homemade fix this way: "I don't know what's in this, but it's better than anything I've ever tried." That endorsement, from a man who'd tried everything else, is essentially the entire marketing story.

The daughter, Tara O'Keeffe Broadbent, mixed those first batches in a farmhouse kitchen using equipment no more exotic than a food processor and a microwave, working under a home-occupation permit. The business was incorporated in 1994 while the family lived in Bend, Oregon; in 1996 they relocated to the tiny town of Joseph in the state's remote northeast corner, chasing a rural farming life and bringing the fledgling operation along. Distribution started where weather-beaten hands actually were: farm supply outlets and hardware stores, long before the cream reached Rite Aid, Walgreens, and the national drugstore aisle.

The approach to selling was almost stubbornly old-fashioned. There was no patent and no flashy launch, just a glycerin-heavy formula that pulls water into the skin and a reputation that traveled by recommendation among people who labored outdoors. Recognition came slowly and from unglamorous quarters. In 2002, Oregon State University's Austin Family Business Program named Working Hands the state's women-owned family business of the year, a milestone for a company still run by a pharmacist and her father out of a small Oregon town.

What's worth keeping in mind is that the line stayed narrow on purpose. Healthy Feet, Skin Repair, and Lip Repair all extended the same single idea: heavy occlusion for genuinely damaged skin, nothing more ambitious. The catalog never sprawled into serums or trend-chasing actives, and that discipline is much of why the original cream still earns its loyalty among workers, gardeners, and people managing diabetic skin.

More about O'Keeffe's

Created in the mid-1990s by pharmacist Tara O'Keeffe to relieve her father's severely dry, cracked hands, O'Keeffe's is a mass-market barrier-cream brand acquired by The Gorilla Glue Company in 2010.

Its products are effective, simply formulated occlusive moisturizers backed by a long commercial track record rather than published clinical studies.
