Long before the billion-dollar revenue and the global ambitions, there was an eighteen-year-old fixing carburetors. When his father died suddenly in the early 1980s, Hou Juncheng took a job as an auto-parts repairman to help support his mother, and only drifted toward cosmetics a decade later by joining a beauty-distribution operation his four older sisters had built in Yiwu, the sprawling wholesale-goods hub of Zhejiang. His role there was relationships and logistics, liaising with factories and shifting other people's products, including 1990s domestic labels like Yue-Sai. That apprenticeship in distribution, not chemistry, is the real seedbed of the company.
For its first decade and a half the line sold mostly on hustle: accessible price points, sharp packaging, and aggressive placement in the smaller-city stores and, later, the livestream rooms where its core buyers, women aged roughly 18 to 24, actually shopped. The pivot that changed everything came around 2020, when the company deliberately shifted from a channel-driven model to a hero-product one. Out went the scattered catalog logic; in came a handful of flagship franchises engineered to dominate. The signature move was the "Early C, Late A" routine, pairing a morning vitamin C with an evening retinal, alongside the Ruby anti-wrinkle line and the Source Force repair series.
That single strategic turn is why the brand suddenly read as science-forward rather than merely cheap and ubiquitous. Each flagship was launched, tested as a smaller product, then expanded into a full franchise once it proved out, a methodical, data-led approach to building bestsellers. The actives are genuinely on-trend and the formulating has grown more sophisticated with every iteration, but the throughline of the whole story is merchandising discipline: the rare mass-market house that figured out how to turn internet attention into a small number of products everyone owns.
