The recipe came out of a hot spring. In Oita prefecture, a spa whose sulfur-rich waters had a local reputation for calming troubled skin inspired the formula that launched this brand, translating mineral-bath folk wisdom into something you could keep in the bathroom. That sulfur lineage explains the slightly medicinal character that still runs through parts of the range, gently sloughing dead cells the way the hot-spring soaks were said to. The company organized formally a few years after that debut product and then, in 1951, introduced the item that became its true signature: Cleansing Pasta. The name is the whole concept in a word. In Japanese, "pasta" here means powder kneaded into a paste, a literal description of the clay-and-botanical texture rather than any nod to Italian food, and it lent the tubes an unmistakable, slightly old-fashioned identity that has barely changed in look across generations of Japanese bathrooms. What is striking is how stubbornly the brand has avoided reinvention. While the wider market churned through actives and trends, this one kept selling variations on a single idea: gentle, effective, genuinely cheap cleansing. A reformulation around clay modernized the core line to match changing tastes, and the paste eventually fanned out into variants tuned for dryness, aging, and rough skin, but the founding promise stayed put. Abroad, the tubes have quietly accumulated a following among shoppers hunting for unpretentious, authentic drugstore J-beauty rather than the next viral serum. The honest framing: this is heritage and reliability rather than treatment-grade innovation, and the sulfur heritage won't suit every skin type. But few skincare objects offer this much continuity for this little money.
