Sooryehan stepped into the market in September 2003 with an unusual advantage for a herbal cosmetics line: a dedicated research arm. LG built the Oriental Medicine Skin Science Research Center, described as Korea's first facility devoted specifically to translating traditional-medicine remedies into cosmetics, and Sooryehan became one of the brands drawing on that work. That meant the hanbang storytelling came attached to formulation science from the outset, rather than being grafted on later.
Where the category often stops at familiar botanicals, Sooryehan's more recent work shows how far the parent's labs have pushed the tradition. Its Black line, anchored by the Black Amino Cleansing Foam that arrived in October 2022, is built on proprietary actives the company developed in-house: a Black Exosome derived from research on Cymbidium orchids, a Black Yeast strain that grows naturally on orchid petals and is rich in polysaccharides and pullulan, and a Black Licorice Complex carrying several patented compounds. It is a striking example of biotech-era ingredient design wrapped in heritage language.
The broader catalog spreads that ambition across tiers. The fermented Hyobidam range applies modern bio-fermentation to medicinal herbs, the BON Extra Moisture series targets hydration for mature skin, and the standalone ginseng creams and essences foreground the single ingredient most associated with Korean herbal beauty. Across all of them the recurring move is the same: take an ingredient with centuries of folk credibility and re-engineer how it is extracted, fermented, or stabilized.
The limits are inherent to the genre. Hanbang formulations rarely carry the kind of independent clinical trial data that ingredient-led derma brands publish, so the case rests heavily on heritage and the parent's manufacturing depth. But for shoppers who want a luxury anti-aging routine rooted in Korean medicinal tradition and backed by a serious corporate research operation, Sooryehan is one of the more substantive options.

More about Sooryehan
Sooryehan is a luxury hanbang (traditional Korean herbal medicine) skincare brand owned by LG Household & Health Care, one of South Korea's largest beauty conglomerates.
An exact launch year could not be verified, but it is an established line backed by LG H&H's research infrastructure for traditional-medicine cosmetics. Its formulations center on ginseng and fermented herbal extracts; credibility rests on the parent's manufacturing scale and research depth rather than on widely published independent clinical trials of the brand's specific products.
