The story behind Topicals Read the full story

Long before her own label, Olamide Olowe was a UCLA student-athlete and pre-med who got an early crash course in the beauty business co-founding SheaGirl, a younger sister line to SheaMoisture launched at Essence Festival in 2016. When Unilever absorbed that company's parent, Sundial Brands, she walked away with a question that pre-med had not answered: why was the skincare aisle so silent about the chronic conditions millions of people actually live with? She had managed her own her whole life, and the market's answer had always been shame and a frowning before-and-after photo.

Her fix was as much cultural as chemical. The packaging arrived loud and joyful, the language treated eczema and stubborn discoloration as ordinary facts of life rather than defects, and the very first releases were built to do the work of several products at once. Faded folded ingredients usually spread across a five-step regimen into a single dark-spot gel, while Like Butter aimed to calm and cushion eczema-prone skin in one mask. Olowe was candid that the prices sat above the drugstore on purpose, the bet being that one well-built multitasker beats a cabinet of single-note bottles.

That refusal to whisper became the brand's signature. Mental-health advocacy ran alongside the products from the start, with proceeds from capsule drops funneled to organizations like Sad Girls Club, and a social presence that made talking about flare-ups feel communal instead of clinical. The work struck a nerve fast, turning early launches into near-instant sell-outs.

The sober caveat the brand itself does not dodge: chronic eczema and persistent hyperpigmentation often demand medical care no shelf product replaces, and a young label's long-term, independent track record is still being built. As a confidence-builder and an entry point into actually caring for difficult skin, though, it earns the loyalty it gets.

Topicals treatment

High Roller Ingrown Tonic

A smart, targeted fix for the bumps generic body washes never touch. High Roller pairs glycolic and salicylic acids with a genuinely soothing support cast and a mess-free roller built for armpits and bikini lines. It stings on raw skin and isn't cheap per ounce, but for chronic ingrowns it earns its spot.

Clearly Breakout Mask

A genuinely gentle update on the old sulfur acne mask. Clearly pairs colloidal sulfur and kaolin with azelaic acid and a calming botanical cast, so it clears congestion and flattens blemishes without the stripping, stinking reputation sulfur usually carries. The 30 mL size makes it pricey, but it's flexible, effective, and kind to the skin.

Faded Brightening & Clearing Serum

One of the more genuinely sophisticated drugstore-adjacent brightening serums going, Faded throws a whole cocktail of evidence-backed pigment fighters, tranexamic and kojic and azelaic acids, niacinamide, arbutin, glutathione, into one bottle aimed squarely at stubborn dark spots and post-acne marks. It works, but slowly and only with sunscreen, and the premium price asks you to be patient. A strong pick for hyperpigmentation, especially in deeper skin tones.

Faded Dark Spot Patches

A smart, precise way to fade one stubborn mark at a time. These patches seal tranexamic acid, niacinamide, kojic acid, and vitamin C against a single dark spot under occlusion, concentrating real brighteners exactly where the pigment is. Results take weeks, and 20 patches go fast, but as targeted spot aftercare they fill a genuine gap.

Faded Under Eye Brightening & Clearing Eye Masks

The most pathway-comprehensive brightening under-eye patches on the market right now — stacking tranexamic acid, kojic acid, alpha-arbutin, niacinamide, and caffeine to attack pigmentation from four different angles. Genuinely effective on melanin-based dark circles, less so on vascular ones, and the $30-for-six-pairs price asks for patience and commitment.

Topicals Like Butter Moisturizer tube on white background Eczema-Soothing Buttery Balm
Topicals moisturizer

Like Butter Moisturizer

A genuinely loaded barrier-repair cream that lives up to its buttery name, Like Butter pairs National Eczema Association-approved colloidal oatmeal with three ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids, and skin-identical amino acids. It soothes dry, itchy, eczema-prone skin beautifully and feels rich without being greasy. The catch is price: the core soothing actives exist in cheaper drugstore creams, so you are paying a premium for the formula's depth and the brand.

Slick Salve Glossy Lip Balm

The viral TikTok lip balm that actually deserves the hype — built on three ceramide types, cholesterol, peptides, and ergothioneine in a glossy wet-look format that looks like a beauty product and performs like a dermatology product. The mint essential oils are the only real caveat for sensitive users.

Like Butter Hydrating Mask

An intensive, leave-on overnight version of the Like Butter philosophy, this mask layers colloidal oatmeal, three ceramides, amino acids, and soothing arnica into a rich treatment for dry, eczema-prone skin. It genuinely leaves skin plumper and calmer by morning and carries a National Eczema Association seal. The honest snag is how closely it overlaps with the brand's own moisturizer at the very same price.

Slather Exfoliating Body Serum

A face-serum lineup of actives poured into a body lotion. Slather stacks encapsulated retinol, glycolic and lactic acids, and keratolytic urea to genuinely smooth keratosis pilaris, strawberry legs, and rough texture, with squalane keeping it from stripping. Use it carefully and it's one of the more effective body treatments at the price.

Sealed Active Scar Filling Primer

A rare scar product that pays off the same day. Sealed uses a medical-grade silicone network to physically fill indented scars and pores on contact, while retinol, a peptide, and salicylic acid treat texture underneath over weeks. The size is small and the blur is temporary, but as a skincare-makeup hybrid it's genuinely useful.

More about Topicals

Co-founded in 2020 by Olamide Olowe and Claudia Teng, Topicals focuses on chronic skin conditions and skin of colour, with formulas the brand describes as clinically tested.

As a young, independent brand it has a strong following but a still-developing record of long-term independent validation.
