The science
A sheet mask acts by occlusion and humectancy, and this one adds a single active at a meaningful dose. Niacinamide at 50,000 ppm, five percent, is the concentration at which controlled studies have shown reduced melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes, improvement in hyperpigmentation and sallowness over eight to twelve weeks of daily application, increased ceramide synthesis and reduced transepidermal water loss; under fifteen to twenty minutes of occlusion it penetrates well, though the evidence base is for daily leave-on use and a twice-weekly mask should be expected to contribute modestly at best. Hippophae rhamnoides water at 146,248 ppm and fruit extract at 750 ppm supply flavonoids, carotenoids and vitamins with in-vitro antioxidant data and function chiefly as a humectant water phase; the fruit's vitamin C content does not translate into a declared ascorbic dose. Betaine and arginine are humectants; allantoin and bisabolol have documented soothing and anti-irritant effects; adenosine has modest leave-on wrinkle data; gluconolactone is a humectant polyhydroxy acid; capryloyl salicylic acid at a trace does not exfoliate in twenty minutes; Coptis japonica root extract contributes berberine with laboratory anti-inflammatory data.
The brightening decoration is measurable from the label. 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid is declared at 1.5 ppm, four orders of magnitude below the one to three percent at which vitamin C derivatives have any evidence, and sodium ascorbyl phosphate is undisclosed at nineteenth; together they cannot contribute. Tranexamic acid has clinical evidence for melasma at two to five percent in daily leave-on use over months and is undisclosed here at thirteenth position below the preservatives, consistent with a trace; glutathione has thin topical evidence at any concentration owing to poor penetration and instability, and its brightening reputation derives from oral and intravenous use. Panthenol is declared at 10 ppm, a trace despite its place on the pouch.
Tolerability is good: no fragrance, essential oils, alcohol, oils or silicones, a mild preservation system of 1,2-hexanediol and ethylhexylglycerin. Five percent niacinamide under occlusion can produce transient flushing in a minority, particularly on rosacea-prone skin. The ingredient list poses no known concern during pregnancy.
