More about belifThe story behind belif Read the full story
The recipes trace to a sickly young Scotsman with a stubborn cough. Duncan Napier, struggling with a chronic respiratory complaint, taught himself to blend herbs into therapeutic potions, and the relief he found turned into a vocation: an Edinburgh apothecary and clinic where he spent decades recording botanical preparations, a written archive said to run past two thousand formulations. That shop, Napiers, still trades in the city, and its old papers are the actual source material the modern brand licenses, not a vaguely "heritage" mood.
The corporate parent has its own deep roots in personal care, reaching back to a 1947 predecessor credited with Korea's earliest commercial face cream, which gives the line serious manufacturing and quality-control muscle. Within that portfolio it was positioned as accessible plant-forward skincare under a "True Skincare" banner, the name itself usually read as a clipped form of "belief" in honest, botanical formulas. The signature plant is lady's mantle, valued for soothing and water-binding, and its hero moisturizer is explicitly a reinterpretation of a Napiers original built around it, often alongside marshmallow root and oat straw drawn from the same archive.
That gel-cream became the gateway moisturizer for a wave of newcomers to Korean skincare, joined by its richer counterpart and a botanical essence, all selling the same dependable promise: hydration that feels good, layers cleanly under actives, and rarely stings.
The honest read separates story from substance. The Victorian-apothecary tale is charming and, unusually, genuinely sourced, but the products earn their keep on their actual ingredient decks rather than on a long-dead herbalist. On that measure they are solidly good, well-textured and gentle, without being radical. Buy it for how reliably it hydrates, not for the legend printed on the box.

More about belif
Launched in 2010 by South Korea's LG Household & Health Care, belif builds its identity around licensed 19th-century Scottish herbal formulas; it benefits from a major conglomerate's R&D, though its appeal rests more on well-formulated hydration than on independent clinical validation.
