The story behind Murad Read the full story

Dr. Howard Murad's first attempt to sell his skincare line to the public was, by his own account, a total flop. To explain what a doctor-branded clinical line even was, he poured money into a late-night infomercial. It made dermatology history and not a single dollar. Most people would have quit; he shot a second one. That one connected, and the world's first modern doctor-branded clinical skincare brand was finally in business.

Murad founded the company in 1989, at the age of fifty, after years as a board-certified dermatologist and trained pharmacist in Los Angeles. His thesis was deceptively simple and, at the time, faintly radical: skincare is healthcare. Rather than treat the face as a cosmetic surface, he argued that visible results came from treating the whole body — hydration, nutrition, and stress alongside topical actives. He branded this 'Inside-Out' beauty, and built a catalogue around vitamin C, alpha hydroxy acids, and later his signature emphasis on cellular water.

The brand's real innovation was access. Before Murad, clinical-grade formulas largely required a trip to the dermatologist; he sold them through spas, estheticians, and eventually mainstream beauty retailers, putting professional-strength products directly in consumers' hands. The line grew into a fixture at Sephora, Ulta, and Nordstrom and a staple in Massage Envy spa treatments, reaching more than forty countries and over $115 million in annual sales by the end of 2014.

That scale drew a buyer. In July 2015 Unilever acquired Murad outright, folding the founder-led company into its prestige portfolio while Dr. Murad stayed on to keep expanding the range.

What you're buying is genuine dermatological pedigree — the topical actives are well-chosen, evidence-backed, and reliably effective for aging and acne concerns, and the price sits sensibly in the mid-prestige bracket. Treat the surrounding 'wellness' philosophy as the founder's worldview rather than settled science; the formulas, thankfully, stand on their own.

Murad treatment

Biome-Balancing Clear & Prevent Acne Treatment Serum

Murad's microbiome-conscious acne serum takes a meaningfully different approach to acne treatment — FDA-active 1% salicylic acid plus mandelic acid plus Ayurvedic botanical anti-inflammatory chemistry plus prebiotic complex that supports beneficial bacteria rather than killing all surface bacteria. For mild to moderate acne, this is a thoughtful alternative to aggressive benzoyl peroxide treatments. The $45 price for 30ml is prestige territory but justified by the multi-active formulation discipline.

Its anhydrous base is also why oily skin finds it greasy, its fragrance declares three allergens, and the vitamin alphabet on the box includes letters that do nothing. Rapid Dark Spot Correcting Serum

The upgraded successor to Murad's original Age Spot serum, now armed with tranexamic acid and glycolic acid for a more aggressive multi-pathway approach to hyperpigmentation. It's genuinely effective — but the alcohol-heavy base, citrus essential oils, and premium price tag make this a high-risk, high-reward proposition for your skin and your wallet.

Retinal ReSculpt Firming Hand Treatment

A retinoid treatment disguised as a hand cream, and a well-thought-out one: encapsulated retinal placed high, niacinamide to protect a barrier that gets washed twenty times a day, hexylresorcinol for the sun spots, and a shea-and-NMF base that behaves like a proper hand cream. Ageing hands have never had a product this considered. It launched this week with no track record, a fragrance with five declared allergens, and a fifty-five-dollar price for two ounces.

Retinal ReSculpt Neck & Décolleté Lifting Serum

The first neck-specific retinal serum from a dermatologist brand, and a well-reasoned one: retinaldehyde placed high, niacinamide fourth to keep thin skin calm, an anti-glycation antioxidant cluster and a cushioned olive base built for a sun-worn chest. It should work the way retinoids work, slowly and on texture rather than on sagging. It launched this week at a hundred and nine dollars with a fragrance it did not need, and the only results so far are Murad's own panel of thirty-two.

Revitalixir Recovery Serum

A pleasant, multi-tasking face-and-eye serum with genuinely useful niacinamide, a neuropeptide, and caffeine wrapped in a stress-recovery wellness narrative. It freshens tired-looking skin and softens fine lines subtly over time. But at $99 for 1.35 ounces, you're paying a steep premium for capable-but-not-exceptional actives plus a compelling story.

Retexturizing Body Pads

A clinical-strength body and face pad that stacks 2% salicylic, glycolic, and azelaic acids to smooth bumpy skin, clear body breakouts, and fade marks in one swipe. Genuinely effective for keratosis pilaris and rough texture, with a hydrator-buffered base, but the per-pad cost runs high and the acid load asks sensitive skin to ease in.

Lipid-Enriched Double Cleansing Balm

Murad's first cleansing balm is meaningfully more than a basic plant-oil formula — the 'lipid-enriched' chemistry adds glycolipids and sphingolipids that support barrier integrity during the cleansing process, while the Camellia japonica oil and dual-ester cleansing base handle the makeup-removal work. At $35 for 50ml, the price is competitive within the prestige cleansing balm category. The fragrance and lemon peel oil inclusion is the one decision that limits sensitive-skin compatibility.

Targeted Pore Corrector

An instant pore-blurring treatment that genuinely delivers a smooth, soft-focus finish the moment you apply it, doubling as an excellent makeup base. The copper-and-amino-acid bio-tech promises gradual pore support but is lightly evidenced, and at $52 for half an ounce, you're paying a steep premium for what is mostly a cosmetic optical effect.

Targeted Wrinkle Corrector

Murad's Targeted Wrinkle Corrector delivers genuinely impressive instant smoothing — fine lines visibly plump and soften within minutes. But at $85 for half an ounce, you're paying luxury prices for what is essentially a well-formulated hyaluronic acid primer with a peptide garnish. The temporary cosmetic fix is real; the long-term anti-aging claims rest on shakier ground.

AHA/BHA/Retinoid Daily Clarifying Peel

A smartly engineered leave-on peel whose two-phase trick makes nightly glycolic exfoliation genuinely comfortable, with a mild retinyl ester and a trace of salicylic acid along for the name. Pores and texture improve on schedule for combination and oily skin. The strengths are undisclosed, the BHA is barely there, and a fragranced, witch-hazel-based acid product is not the choice for reactive skin, but as a daily clarifier it earns its place and its $49.

Clarifying Toner

An old-school astringent toner that does exactly what it sets out to do: degrease and mattify genuinely oily skin while leaving a cooling, refreshed finish. The witch-hazel-and-menthol formula works, but alcohol, fragrance, and citral make it a narrow pick — great for true oily skin, a poor fit for anyone sensitive or dry.

Retinal ReSculpt Body Treatment

A genuinely uncommon product: a serious encapsulated-retinal treatment built for the body rather than the face. It smooths crepey skin and improves firmness on arms, thighs and knees with a rich, well-absorbing base, and body skin tolerates it easily. The catch is paying $79 for a body cream and accepting that stretch-mark and cellulite claims are softer than the firming results.

Murad's most serious retinoid: encapsulated retinaldehyde cushioned in a rich, barrier-supporting base that makes a potent active surprisingly comfortable. Rapid Collagen Infusion

A silky, primer-like serum that genuinely makes fine lines look softer within two hours, through silicone powder and Murad's humectant complex rather than anything to do with collagen, and washes off at the next cleanse. Cellular Hydration Barrier Repair Cream Moisturizer

A barrier cream composed the way dermatology describes barrier repair, squalane second on the list, essential fatty acids and sterols, a ceramide-mimic, niacinamide to prompt the skin's own ceramides, and an anti-irritant that stops stinging on contact. It rescues over-exfoliated, retinoid-burned and winter skin within a day, and it is the stronger half of Murad's Cellular Hydration pair. Seventy-three dollars and a fragrance it should not have are the only real objections.

More about Murad

Founded in 1989 by board-certified dermatologist and trained pharmacist Dr.

Howard Murad, the brand was among the first to bring clinical-grade skincare to consumers without an office visit, and its formulations are backed by decades of practice and published research. Acquired by Unilever in 2015, it retains deep dermatological credibility, though some of its wellness-adjacent 'inside-out' claims rest on softer evidence than its topical actives.
