Here is a problem most skincare buyers never think about: the gentlest possible formula — no fragrance, no surfactants, no preservatives — is also the most vulnerable, because the same preservatives that irritate sensitive skin are what stop a jar from breeding bacteria. For a brand built entirely around soothing reactive, intolerant complexions, that contradiction was an existential one, and solving it became its defining act of engineering.
The answer took more than a decade in the labs at Lavaur. The result, finalized around 2009, was a patented dispensing system the brand calls D.E.F.I. — a tube and closure that keeps a sterile, preservative-free formula sterile through every squeeze, sealing out air and microbes during the entire life of the product. It let the company sell genuinely preservative-free creams in normal-sized tubes rather than tiny single-use sachets, and the packaging itself collected industry design honors in 2018. The Tolérance line for hyper-reactive skin became its showcase.
That obsession with minimalism shaped the rest of the catalog. The repair-focused Cicalfate range, the eczema-oriented XeraCalm A.D line, the targeted ranges for redness and acne — all share a philosophy of stripping a formula down to the fewest possible ingredients and then protecting it ruthlessly. Manufacturing stays on-site at the source so the spring water never has to be shipped or stabilized for transit, a logistical constraint the brand turned into a selling point.
What you're actually buying, then, is engineered restraint. The flip side is honest: a deliberately bare formula soothes and protects rather than transforms, and anyone chasing dramatic active-driven change should reach for the targeted lines, not the famous water spray. But for skin that flares at almost everything, few brands have built their entire technical apparatus around doing less, more safely.
